What is the PC Perspective HW Leaderboard?

Updated Jan 13, 2011:
Along with the PCPer HWLB its self, you can also head to the PCPer Hardware Leaderboard forum! This forum is where you can discuss my selections and offer your own suggestions. It is also the place for you to talk about the new system build you are working on even if it's NOT based on anything here.

Our Dream System features Intel's current ultimate CPU, the Socket 2011 i7-3960X . This means that we need to add an X79 motherboard and the MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) is a great choice.  This also means a new RAM kit, with 16GB of quad-channel madness from Corsair.  A 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD will ensure you have the fastest storage media available.  AMD's brand new HD 7970 arrives on the Hardware Leaderboard this month, it is the best single GPU card on the planet and once the drivers mature it should double up quite nicely.

There is also an alternative Dream System, the system so powerful it has gone to plaid! The price more than doubles but you will be running dual Xeon X5650s and two HD7970s.  Soon the Extreme System will move to the new generation of CPUs as EVGA has finally announced the SR-X dual socket LGA2011 motherboard.

The new High End system is quite happily embracing Intel's brand new SandyBridge platform; in more ways than one.  With the new Z68's, specifically the GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3-iSSD, not only do you get the advantage of the i7-2600K's integrated GPU, you get a built in 20GB SSD which enables Intel's Smart Response Technology.  The High End system is suffering a bit thanks to product shortages, with no Sandy Bridge E i7-3820 CPUs available for purchase.  As well the overclocked ZOTAC GTX560s are gone, which gives the GTX 560 Ti 448 Core card a chance to shine and EVGA's Classified model sports a nice overclock straight out of the box.

Our Mid-Range System continues to showcase Intel's latest CPU architecture now that we have a great chipset to go with it.  A Core i5 2500K sits on an Gigabyte GA-Z68M-D2H, perhaps not as good as the previous motherboard, but that MSI model has been discontinued.  The ZOTAC AMP! has been discontinued but Sparkle can take up the slack with their overclocked Calibre Series X560 DF.  The Corsair Vengeance DDR3 is still a great deal and while the 1TB Deskstar is nowhere near the same bargain it is less expensive than last month. Remember that with an extra ~$100 you can buy an adapter and put a 40GB Intel SSD in and have SRT make the Seagate respond much quicker.

An upgraded Core i3 2105 gives you the better Intel graphics and a BIOSTAR TZ68A+ is about the best value going in an X68 board which makes it perfect for the Budget Build.  A small drop in the price of the Corsair Vengeance kit is welcome since the 750GB HDD is nowhere near the price we were accustomed to.   The CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 that powers the Budget System is a steal at its current price.  The HD6670 stays to provide decent gaming potential as well as video out for HTPCs; this month it is XFX with the best value.
